Hawaii’s the best bet for this venture. Since it was a volcano that created Hawaii in the first place, Kilauea’s been fairly active since the early 1980s. In Hawaii’s Volcanoes National Park, travelers can and should visit the Devastation Trail. Named as such because of Kilauae’s Iki’s eruption in 1959 and wiped out that area that used to be a forest. Craters and other volcanic activity that scar these parks are testament of the raw beauty and incomprehensible destructive power these natural beauties hold.
Costa Rica’s got her share of active Earth belchings, as it were. The most famous of the island’s volcanoes is Mount Irazu, the highest of the country while Pous comes in a close second. But, it’s the country’s Mount Arenal that’s most active. Irazu erupted in 1963 and left that region fairly devastated. The year 2000 was the latest activity from Mount Arenal and in that event, one person died, 600 Costa Ricans were evacuated and left dozens hurting. Still, as demolishing as volcanoes are, they don contribute to that country’s landscape and countryside, which in turn, the views tourists love to enjoy also contributes to their country’s economy.
New Zealand’s another place to scope for volcanic activity. Geysers, or geothermal areas, which are great indicators of walking over volcanic terrain, are holes in the ground which spout steam and water and explode vertically when enough pressure is behind them. These are from underground rumblings of a volcano and doesn’t assure or guarantee future volcanic activity, however. These just let travelers know a volcano is there. White Island in New Zealand is the most active on the Bay of Plenty. While NZ’s Tongariro has several areas of geysering activity, Ngaruhoe and Ruapehu erupt ever few years or decades intermittently. When these times are caught, it’s a great time to catch any of these volcanoes—in Hawaii and Monut St. Helen's in Washington State, USA, Costa Rica or in New Zealand—to see a rare Earth forming activity at work.
