NEW DELHI:A Dubai-bound passenger, Michael Masih, was allegedly extorted of 1,600 euros and US $100 by a customs official on Thursday at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
According to sources, Masih was forcibly made to part with the money by an assistant commissioner of customs. The incident took place around 8.30 am.
The passenger reported the matter to Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) staff, which is incharge of airport security. "He said that he had also been threatened by the concerned official that he would not be allowed to board the flight and thrown out of the airport if he reported the matter," said an airport official.
Sources said the matter was taken up with customs officials by the airport staff after which the official was forced to return the money. "First they did not allow the complainant to meet the official. However, after the matter was brought to the notice of a deputy commissioner of customs, the entire amount was returned to the passenger by two other officials," said an airport official.
