It has been 2 years since I last visited the place, but Dartmoor national park has really left its mark on me.
Whether you are a keen walker, climer, photographer, naturalist, or looking for somewhere to enjoy a bit of peice and quite - your bound to find just that within this breathtaking region of natural beauty.
The geology of the area is quite unique in all of the UK. Large rocky jutting tors and lowland bogs stretch across the heather coated landscape. There are also many small weather-beaten trees in Dartmoor (take a visit to the stunted oldland wood!)...an excellent subject for that perfect photograph.
I usual camp out on approved parts of the moor, but quite often for the sake of my family, set up our tent around the back of the Plume of Feathers Inn, in Princetown. A great little campsite, with immediate walking access to some of the best parts of the moors. I found this site on the bizarrely named shmootcase. It also has cabins for those of us who prefer creature comforts.
Some noteable places to visit while in Dartmoor are:
Becky Falls Woodland Park
Buckfast Butterflies & Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary
Cardew Tea Pottery
Morwellham Quay
The Dartmoor Railway
...and plenty of Tors:
Hound Tor
Phinx Tor
Hay Tor...etc
I use Dartmoors own website to find out what is on.
Regards, John.
