Hi,
I will soon be moving to New York State. I have heard that the weather gets pretty cold in these parts. At the moment I cycle to work, will this still be possible, or do I need to buy a car?
Hi,
I will soon be moving to New York State. I have heard that the weather gets pretty cold in these parts. At the moment I cycle to work, will this still be possible, or do I need to buy a car?
It obviously snows in New York so you need a car as you'll not be able to drive the bike when there will be snow. You can ask your boss to provide you a car.
During the cool winter months, biking will not be an option, unless you want to convert your bike to a snow bike. :) I would suggest researching the area you will be living in and commuting to, before you purchase a car. Very few people that I know have their own cars if they are living in the city, as gas is too expensive and a taxi is usually quicker!
I completely agree that it would be premature to jump in and buy a car until you know whether or not you can commute. The traffic in New York can be so bad that you would wish you had a bike instead, so really if you can avoid that I would do at any costs.
If you can manage (like most try to) in keeping your home and work fairly close, you can end up using the subs or a cab to get around. If I moved there, there is no way I would purchase a car, unless I lived outside of the city. There is just no room, and I will never pay for a place to park my car in a garage that I'm sure has outstanding monthly fees. I would check all areas to move to/work to first before attempting this move, it might be a tricky one.
From what I hear about New York from my sister, who has lived there for a couple years now, it is convenient to get around without a car or bike. It snows, so a bike is not going to be practical year round. You can use buses or taxis to get to work, even though they would be more expensive.
I would not like to rely on NY yellow cabs very often. Not unless you are a celebrity :P Just too expensive, even for a very short ride.
I know that it's a little
I know that it's a little late to help you out, but in case anybody else had the same question, it does snow in New York. I think it would be very difficult to ride a bike in the snow, besides being frozen on the way to work. :)
