I want to spend two weeks in New York. I'm a student and that's why I am on very short budget. Is it possible to save there? And how much money is enough to take? :?
Thanks

I'm sure that it's not cheap in New York. Search some on the internet and I'm sure that you'll find something 'cheap'. In every city there's something cheap!
well... this is not the best news... :? of course I could spend time with my friends camping in surroundings... but my dream is to see New York! at least for some days... and I would mind visiting "cheap'' places, i'd choose visiting best places but to try to spend money wisely. By the way, found out that it does makes sense to use hostels and eat food bought from deli's. anyway... thanks for paying attention!
Cheers :)
This may be a little late - but you may want to stay in NJ or Brooklyn where the hotels and motels are a lot cheaper.
you can buy an unlimited 7 day subway pass for only $24 http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm#unlimited
it would only take you 15 minutes to get to NYC on the subway
hello,
if you are looking at doing a lot of things in New York try this linke below to book a ticket in advance that allows you to do loads of things, my cousin who lives in New York recomended it, all his friends get them when they visit him.
I brought two for January 2004, my girlfriend and i were going to stay with my cousin for two weeks, but she changed her mind on the way to the airport as she was scared to fly on new years eve with a the terrorism scares :(
never managed a refund or an insurance claim for any of the holiday so for me New York was well expersive and i didn't even get there lol.
I have booked to have 3 nights there in November, if she changes her mind this time i will leave her behind.

New York certainly is a expensive place but you can travel really cheap. Try to look for youth hostels and maybe you can fly with rynair or something?
I agree with you Younglinkie! :D my friend came back from U.S. with his girlfriend. They spent 2 months travelling heaps in US and each of them only spent $3000.
Thats including return flight ticket..
They spent quite a few nights in trains though...

Trains can sometimes be a much cheaper place to sleep then hotels, it's funny but it's true spidey! And it takes you somewhere too.
You don't need to sleep in a five star hotel to make some fun :)
Dear Kamilla,
Maybe my answare is in a little bit late, but the New York can be cheap and expensive, too :) It's depend on your perfect accomodation finding.
Usually the motels are between 45 - 60 USD, the hotels are more
expensive but their quality is a little bit other ;)
I found a New York relevant link for you with a search engine:

I think if you get for me more informations about your exact destination,
I can help for your more.
You can do New York on a budget and it is still pretty good, its small enought that you can walk almost everywhere to site see, although the open top bus tour is cheap and you can hop on and off them as you please, its cheaper than getting a taxi. Breakfast is cheap if you go to any of the small cafes instead of eating in the hotel.
If you go to Greenwich Village lots of the bars have free entertainment so your evenings can be cheap as well.
The definition of CHEAP in NY is probably expensive as relative to other places or its just a pun. I too have heard that it is third most expensive city in world and I myself have been to London and accomodation and food there costs a bomb!! I can verywell imagine how Cheap ny would be. But if you carefully plan up your vacation then you would be saving up on unnecessary costs occuring on your trip which you can easily avoid.
I would try to check out some hostels if you are up for it, they are fairly cheap on the budget, and this way you can save more for travel about the city. :)
I think that food could be done way cheaper than London. I haven't been to Tokyo, but I have to both London and NY, and although accommodation will be expensive, I think you can cut plenty of corners. Biggest thing will be staying as far out of the city as you can manage, but balance that with the increase in travel cost.
Can New York be an inexpensive place to travel?
Hi Kamilla,
Welcome to the forum...:)
I've not been to the Big Apple but from what I've heard, NY is the 3rd most expensive city to live in after Tokyo and London... I've been to Tokyo and London and yes.. it's bloody expensive to be travel there... So, at the back of my mind, NY is going to cost crazy...
If you are looking to save, you can put yourself up in hostels or b&b or even travel in a group...
Good luck in your trip!! :)
