Wildlife Park/Zoo Recommendations...

I enjoy visiting zoo's and wildlife parks, though unfortunately I don't get the time to go as often as I'd like.

The last place I went to was Edinburgh zoo, and although it had a few major attractions - The big cats in particular - It wasn't really that spectacular. My main concern is that many of the animals seemed too big for their enclosures which wasn't good to see. I know they are kept well and looked after by the keepers, but when you take the miles of open space away from wild animals, you can't help but feel a little sorry for them.

I'm looking at making a trip in late spring time to either a zoo or wildlife park and wondered if anyone had any suggestions in the UK? I live pretty central though I don't mind travelling if there is something worth seeing.

Any suggestions are most welcome.

Zoos

I love the London Zoo.
When I went there, they had a great insect house.

London Zoo is fantastic - A wide variety of animals are on show along with plenty of other visitor attractions such as cafe, restaurant, gift shop and so forth. There are also plenty of shows and guides around the park keeping visitors entertained and informed - nothing beats watching various animals at feeding time.

I enjoyed Edinburgh Zoo but some animals did appear to be confined a little by their surroundings which is always disappointing to see. Having said that, I've not seen one zoo in which I felt that the pens/cages/enclosures were sufficiently sized.

Appauled!

I've visited Edinburgh Zoo whilst I was living there and I was appauled! My main concern was for the poor Polar Bear. It was pacing up and down in this tiny enclosure which had no water in it at all. What made me more appauled was that during the heat waves of last summer, the local newspaper printed that as it was so hot the zoo had had to give the Polar Bear some water to swim in to keep it cool! Is it me or isn't a polar bear's natural habitat surrounded by sea?

I've been told by family that Longleet is one of the best places to see animals in the UK.

I would have thought that a polar bear would at the very LEAST had water available, year-round, but especially during the summer.

I've heard some really nice things about the London Zoo, as well. I wish I could tell you from first hand experience, but I haven't had the pleasure yet.
