tsunamis

Pretty sad what happened... and very nice article to help explain how they work :)

tsunamis

Excellent article! I have had occasional and recurring nightmares about tsunamis all my life. When I lived in Miami, during hurricanes, I used to fear that would happen. When we left Miami almost three years ago, one of the reasons we picked Las Vegas - aside from the fact that our daughter and her family live here - is that it is NOT on the ocean. Miami is 35 feet above sea level while Las Vegas is 2,163 ft high. And we are surrounded by mountains.

Actually though, I feel when it is your time to go, whereve you are, it will happen. All we can do is take reasonable precautions. I once saw a cute cartoon showing two ants discussing philosophy. One said to the other, "You can't spend your life waiting to be crushed by the big foot from the sky."

tsunamis

I have never experienced tsunami before.

must have been a traveler message to another..

The chances of Miami getting hit by a Tsunami are about the same as getting hit by Lightning 5 times in a row. If you think about it, the majority of the fault lines are over a thousand miles out, on top of that miami will have some protection from the Shallow waters of the Bahamas.

Crazy Stuff....

1) Fears are not always rational.

2) For the sake of my friends who still live there, I hope you are right.

I hope your right too. I love Miami, I hope there are earthquake detectors near Miami waters for that.

tsunamis

Fact: Miami is 35 feet above sea level. A typical Miami thunderstorm causes street flooding. The City is not equipped to handle this even though it happens frequently during the rainy season.

When the sun shines in Miami in winter, it is a wonderful place to vacation. In the summer, the humidity is very high. I lived in a condo overlooking the Bay with beautiful views and sea breezes. :D

I had been to singapore a few years ago and when i heard about Tsunami then i couldn't beleive my eyes when I say the beaches of pataya ruined and so much of destruction there.

Yes, they are a horrible natural disaster, and the recent one killed over 100,000 people. Instead of fighting ourselves we should be fighting nature.

How can we "fight" nature? Have you ever experienced the awesome power of a serious hurricane or tornado or earthquake? The best we can hope to do is keep ourselves safe..............

I was so horrified by the sight of the Tsunami. The newspaper showed images of the place which was shattered people who were homeless, children who were orphaned, tourists who were stranded. I have pledged not to go to that place in near future.

It really is sad that in this day and age, a tsunami can still cause such devastation. My heart goes out to everybody who has been affected by the devastation. I've never witnessed a tsunami, nor do I ever want to.
