I have not been doing much traveling of late and feel like a neophyte when it comes to buying even domestic plane tickets. I have to attend the wedding of a friend in the near future, and the best deal I could find for a round-trip ticket non-stop was $350.00 Next thing I know is my friend tells me he found a flight for only $236.00 What I want to know is where do you guys go first to get the best flight deals? I just write it off as my friend being a Doctor and getting special treatment :) But I want to know where the best place is to go for the best deals.

Mostly what I do is that I check up for seats and fare online through the website of the airliner then I call up my adent who books me the tickets and sends me by hand by evening same day. I hand over check to the messenger and my payment is done.

The tour/travel agents usually offer a cheaper price.
Actually i usually find it the opposite! For example, my partner and I are planning to go to Cyprus next year and we promised ourselves that we wouldn't fly economy anymore. Went to the travel agents and found the business class flight to be over £3000! Went To BA.com and found the flight to be only £420! A tad of a difference there  So my advice would be to go to the travel agents first and then look online, specifically at the airlines website.

I prefere the airlines websites but I usually shop around first on some of the travel sites. Unfortunately some websites are so badly designed that I have on occasion given up - but if you have the time it's worth trying them. I like that you can pick your seat on some of them (check out SeatGuru.com so you can see what the seat diagram really means).

If you're 25 or under, you can check if there's a student travel agency in your town. They can usually come up with pretty cheap airfares plus special perks -- from one of the agencies where I live (Chi- Town), I bought a plane ticket to Phuket that gave me a two-day stopover in Hanoi.

If you are able to avoid
If you are able to avoid weekend travel, this helps. Fri/Sat/Sun is always more expensive than weekday (how many people want to take a 6am flight on a Tuesday?). Also, if you can manage to drive to an airport (example, save money drive to Newark Airport in NJ, rather than leave from JFK in NY), if you can do this, sometimes you can save anywhere from 50-150USD (it really depends your trip in general). If you can get an idea of the most common airlines that travel the areas you need (example: From NY/NJ, CO flies from the most, AZ or west coast check Southwest flights, etc.) this will help as well.
Sometimes agencies will have cheaper fares, sometimes the on line specials that run will, it really depends on how soon you need to leave, and how flexible you are for the specific trip.
- This comes from an ex travel agent, let me know if you have any further questions. Good luck! :)
Like the majority of people
Like the majority of people here, I try to buy my tickets online. I always seem to get a better deal online than with a travel agent. I look at various websites, I don't have a favorite in particular.
I buy my plane tickets
I buy my plane tickets online too. It's just so much easier to get them online than to actually deal with people. It's very simple, and I never have trouble.
Check to see if you qualify
Check to see if you qualify as a student or youth (I am neither, but I still contact my old work to see what their rates are), then I will check some on line specials to see which of the two are better, if I don't find any luck with either of the two, I will then call the 5 cheapest airlines (from agency/on line results) and usually find the best deal over all. :)
I exclusively buy online,
I exclusively buy online, and have never used an agent. I don't like the idea of having to pay the agent's fees. I don't just use one site either, I may end up visiting a dozen travel sites before I find a decent deal.
When considering driving to a big airport, take into account the costs of long term parking, and gas for the car. It worked out cheaper for me recently to go from BWI, and connect at EWR, rather than drive all the way there.
I try to shop around, I am
I try to shop around, I am really picky about spending money when I can find a better deal if I wait a little longer. Sometimes the reason I travel out of season. :) I can still enjoy the place when the weather is not perfect, actually if I am looking for a place to move to (different state/country) I would rather see the bad before the good. :)
I too am a bargain hunter.
I too am a bargain hunter. My cash and I are great buddies and do not like being parted paying for services that I do not need and will not use.
I am pretty much the same
I am pretty much the same way. I like to shop around to find the best bargain, and I don't mind going on the trip when it's out of season too. In fact, I prefer it, because it's not as crowded as usual.
