When booking a flight do you always try and book it direct, or do you prefer to save money by taking whatever the cheapest route is, even if that means three plane changes?

When I was travelling just with my husband I would always take the cheapest route, regardless of changes. Now that I have a family to drag around, I weigh the price against the extra hassle of moving them too often.
