My ambition, by the time I die, is to have travelled to every state in the union. I have a long way to go as I have only managed five so far, but then I am only 29 so I think I have some more time!
Anyone else done this?

I think that traveling to each state would be interesting, but I don't think it's something that I'll do. As a child, I always thought about it, but now that I'm older I don't feel the need to visit every state, although I've been to many.
If I had the money, I would visit every state at least once. I love seeing the ways that other people live, and I love to experience other cultures. I'm pretty close to getting there!
Oh this sounds like fun! I haven't so much as thought about it, but since I am new to this country I haven't seen many. This would give direction to our future vacations at least! Thanks for the idea.
I am so glad that I am not alone in this! It seems one of the more easily completed ambitions in my life, so there seems no reason to not try at least. Worst that could happen is the plane could crash right!
I think that if I were to travel to each state, I would go by car (except for Hawaii and Alaska of course!) just because I think it would be a great part of the experience. Although it might be less leisurely, I could go at my own pace and see everything that I want to see without a set schedule.
Given that I don't intend to do every state in one trip, I don't think that this would be possible for me. It seems an awfully large distance to drive from this coast, for instance to drive to LA. I don't think I could cope with that.
I would try to do afew states at a time if able. When my husband moved from Cali to SC it took him a good 4-5 drive (and hes not one for stopping). :)
i have driven across country 3 times and have seen most of the lower 48 states this way. In my opinion they are not all worth seeing unfortunately. I would pick states with places you genuinely want to see. I'm not going to name which states I do not prefer since everyone likes different things but I do suggest researching the states before you visit to really make sure you don't come away from the visit feeling it was a waste.
I agree with ashtonsmith to a point. I think you should visit those closest to you, that you are 100% sure you want to visit in the first place. However, I think each state always has something to offer, maybe he/she just did not find the right place during their own trip. Most of the states I have seen, I have either lived in, did a quick weekend vacation trip, or I drove through when moving across the US, I do not recommend greyhound for vacation though, unless you have plenty of time. :)
Thank you ashtonsmith. At this point however, a short jaunt across a border for lunch would suffice as having 'done' that state, so I am not so worried! I plan to do those that I wish to see, and try and cover some bordering states at the same time,
Some of the best trips I had were short ones. We went to an outdoor mall between the SC and NC boarder, and we ended up in Charlotte NC that night b/c my husband did not want to 'drive back into the sun', haha. It was a good evening, we got in about 3pm, got a fairly decent priced hotel, walked all around downtown, found a great pub had a nice dinner, went out after-wards for drinks (my you, before our daughter was born), and then came back to the hotel and had a mini honeymoon. Sometimes the surprises are the best!
Even I want to travel all of the states but till now I have explored just 7 and hope to finish them before I am 60. I am 25 now.
I don't think I have done this on purpose, maybe just on accident. I have seen a couple of different states and some attractions but not enough to put into a list. Places I must visit before I die are: Nevada, California and New York.
That would be a cool task to do, but I am not sure how much time I would want to put into some places. Honestly, I'm sure there are atleast a dozen places per state I would want to see, and that might take some time. Guess its a good thing I can organize well. :)
This sounds like it would be so great. I would really like to visit every state, because I do believe that every state has something different to offer, culture-wise. I hope I get the chance to do this, I love to do road trips, and this would be the supreme road trip!
To achieve this kind of thing I am sure that some would literally just set foot in the state. It sounds something nice to achieve, but then I haven't even been to all the countries that make up Great Britain so perhaps I should start there!
Well this is one way to take care of four states at once if you want. :)

Wow, that almost seems like cheating! When I lived in the states, I was at the corner of three states, and almost every week I would be in each of the three at some point. I am sure that if you organised well you could cover a bunch of the states by 'cornering' them.
That really is cheating! If I went, I would like to at least spend a day in each state, or at least do something that relates to the culture of that specific area. I wouldn't want to just literally stand in the state.
This is something that I
This is something that I wish to accomplish as well, and I think that I can do it. I've been to over 20 states already, so I'm about halfway done! I think that it's a great way to learn about culture, as each region of the US is truly unique.
