When you were a kid did you think this place really existed? Well, it does. :) Check out below for some more details you may not have been aware of!
Timbuktu is located in Mali (western Africa).
The name, as legend goes (Timbuktu has many legends and tales):
The place name is said to come from a Tuareg woman named Buktu who dug a well in the area where the city stands today; hence "Timbuktu", which means "Buktu's well".
Even as an impoverished town, it still seems to pull in tourists from all over the world.
Djinguereber Mosque is a famous learning center of Mali built in 1327 in which many come to visit.
Bernard Peter de Neumann, GM (1917–1972) "The Man From Timbuctoo".[9] Held prisoner of war there along with other members of the crew of the Criton during 1941-1942.
I never knew this place was
I never knew this place was real! It bothers me that so many schools do not teach about some of the amazing places in Africa. I know that trying to get school quicklime is hard, but it seems that looking back now - so many places were never mentioned, and these are some seriously awesome places that need to be taught about! Almost makes me want to home school my children.
