It has been a while since I was able to travel with a student rail card. In that time the prices of train tickets has gone up and up, and I cannot believe how much you now have to pay for even a short journey. How do they justify these high prices?
British Rail-Why So Pricey?
Sometimes if you are lucky,
Sometimes if you are lucky, you can still find some good discounts being a student or youth. The same reason stated above (price of oil) is just like you thinking here, after Sept. 11th, that airfare prices went up (weather true airfare, or just all the extra taxes) to make up for lost money. Supply & Demand. Supply low, demand high = prices insane. :(
This is not totally true. It
This is not totally true. It is now cheaper in some routes to fly than it is to go by rail. I do not understand the reason behind this especially when rail service is so poor, with so many frequently late trains. Fuel prices in the UK are because the government taxes petrol so heavily, not to do with post 9/11 issues.
Didn't the UK government
Didn't the UK government recently put a green tax on flights? Has that altered the equation at all, made it cheaper to avoid flying within the country?
Many prices have gone up
Many prices have gone up after Sept. 11th, less people travel, less using the rail system, etc. I think the prices are abit step, but well worth the price too. I have never known anyone to have a bad experience with rail.
The prices have been high on
The prices have been high on British rail for a long time; well before 9/11, it doesn't have anything to do with that, sorry. It all went pear shaped when the rails were privatised, and instead of healthy competition driving prices down, they made a mess of running the rails. The prices just crept up and up as the rails were mismanaged and the CEOs were paid more and more, driving prices up.
England has always been an
England has always been an expensive country to travel in. With oil getting expensive day by day the private as well as public transport has become expensive there. Now atleast you can go via trains, but in London the taxi fares are exhorbitantly high.
